Yesterday, it happened again. Another mass shooting.
And as always, we’re filled with “shoulds.”
Our legislators SHOULD step up. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 expired in 2004. Attempts to renew this ban have failed, as have attempts to pass a new ban, such as the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013.
Appalling.
And our systems SHOULD catch mental health risks regarding their access to weapons (and access to schools where weapons aren’t allowed anyway).
Disturbing.
But the truth is, a lot of people ARE working on these things. And perfect legislation and systems wouldn’t be fail-proof (even though they would help tremendously).
Today, I choose to focus on the CANs instead of the SHOULDs. I can contact a legislator. (I just did. I wrote to a state senator.) I can support non-profits that deal with mental health.
I can befriend a lonely person.
I mean, why not?
