“Sometimes we stop so short of deep understanding.”

I don’t know who said that, but I agree. It’s easier to stick with the beliefs we formed in our immaturity than to risk transcendence. So we stop short. Maintaining the status quo is just so…stable.

I don’t mean to say that the beliefs we adopted as children are wrong. I became a Christian at any early age and that hasn’t changed. But we can always go deeper. Getting to know God is a neverending story.

This moment in history is hard to understand. Maybe we accept the mystery. Maybe we go deeper, especially if we’re hearing the whisperings to our soul that it’s possible.

The editor of Plough Quarterly suggests that we can have an “urgent and exhilarating” conversation around advancing justice, living sustainably, and finding a healthy vision for the common good in an incisive yet generous way.

Exhilarating. Incisive. Generous.

A more excellent life awaits. What an opportunity we have. Not shallow, but transcendent. Not me first, but you first. Not stuck, but knowing. Knowing it’s possible. For us. For others.

I’ve noticed that as people go deep into the mysteries of God, they don’t get angrier, greedier, and meaner. They don’t get more savvy at bad tactics, which are pressing on us constantly. The opposite happens. Their understanding deepens and love grows.

What if this is our moment to go deep?
