There’s a verse in the Bible I love. It’s 1 Corinthians 4:1 and was written by the apostle Paul and his colleagues. “Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.”
I want people to regard me that way too…as a servant of Christ and a steward of the mysteries of God.
But sometimes I get judged by fellow Christians for not fitting the MAGA mold. Paul, btw, got judged too. A few verses after the one quoted above, he shot back with “It is the Lord who judges me.” Anyway, incredibly, not fitting that mold is the very thing that has opened doors to talk about the teachings of Christ. I’ve heard people say, “I had no idea.”
But alas, I’m an imperfect steward. I’m just a regular imperfect person who loves God.
Anyway, there’s also another way we can be stewards. Frederick Buechner wrote about a man who once told him, ‘You have had a good deal of pain in your life, and you have been a good steward of it.” A steward is someone who protects something of value. The mysteries of God have immense value. So does our pain. We can steward it. Comfort others. Know that all is not lost. In fact, stewarding can be the very thing that gives our lives meaning and purpose.
