What is greatness? I’ve always been confused about the “make America great again” thing. Great globally? We were already the greatest superpower the world had ever known when that phrase was coined. (The question is, are we still?) Economically? The US economy was at its best under three Democratic presidents (FDR, LBJ, and Clinton). Great again like those? Morality, values, and principles-wise? And the spokesperson has none of those? There has to be some other definition of greatness that I’m not aware of.

How is greatness defined by others?

“The greatest among you shall be your servant.” Jesus Christ (Matt. 23:11)

“Real greatness is often hidden, humble, simple, and unobtrusive. It is not easy to trust ourselves and our actions without public affirmation. We must have strong self-confidence combined with deep humility.” Henri Nouwen

“If any man seeks for greatness, let him forget greatness and ask for truth, and he will find both.” Horace Mann

“The great must submit to the dominion of prudence and of virtue, or none will long submit to the dominion of the great.” Edmund Burke

“I believe that the first test of a great man is his humility. Really great men have a curious feeling that the greatness is not of them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other man and are endlessly, foolishly, incredibly merciful.” John Ruskin

“Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position, or prestige. It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.” William Arthur Ward

“Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

So here’s my vote for 2026 and beyond. Let’s make America full of character, goodness, truth, and service to others again.

Wouldn’t that be great?
