Last Thursday night, as I was about to give the welcoming remarks at our Principles First event, a famous person walked by. I hadn’t ever met him before, but he looked me in the eye, called me by name, shook my hand, and thanked me for inviting him to speak. I had a star struck moment. I sort of fanned my face and whispered, “wow…”

Which of course was caught on video and livestreamed on X. Turns out the viewership was around 10,000.

Sheesh.

But as I was driving home, it hit me. This was a perfect metaphor of the movement. The “famous” are standing side by side with the “ordinaries.” It’s all hands on deck. As retired Federal Judge Michael Luttig said afterwards, “This room was full of true patriots tonight.”

In case you’re wondering what movement I’m talking about, I’ll explain it the way I see it. Our country is having a redefining moment. A National Reformation.

A re-formation.

It is…
pro-principles,
pro-democracy,
pro-truth,
pro-Constitution,
pro-rule of law,
pro-equality,
pro-balance,
pro-freedom,
pro-science,
pro-economy,
pro-morality,
pro-order,
pro-world, and
pro-sanity.

It’s not just pro-equality in the usual senses, but politically too. Our speaker panel consisted of Democrats and Republicans seated side by side. Some predict partisanship will go away. The citizenry will vote according to whether or not a candidate has principles.

Checks-and-balances will return. Authoritarianism and the fear of losing one’s job if you speak truth will be things of the past. Polarization will be recognized for what it is–contrived to divide us. Hopefully the reformed version of us won’t be so easily duped.

Capriciousness will be called OUT. Maturity and wisdom will be called ON.

No longer will a person of zero moral fiber be called on as the crusader against hedonism. And there will be a reckoning of what morality means. One can’t be anti-abortion, yet heedless of the Palestinian slaughter, and call themselves pro-life.

About the world. There’s nothing biblical about “us first.”

And about sanity. The President has been given complete immunity for any crimes he commits while in office. He can defy the rule of law and the Constitution. That is not sane.

So yeah, I had a star struck moment…and then realized that there are no little people in this Reformation. We are in this together. We are coalescing. We are fighting a good fight. Yes, we are opposing the current administration, but this is so much bigger than that.

As my friend, Elaine, says, “It’s not just an opportunity to get back on track. It’s our moment to grow wings.”
