What is righteousness? Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for it. Should we seek it around us or inside of us?

If around us, I think we Americans are in an interesting spot. Goodness is baked into our Constitution. Equality, due process, freedom, justice for all. SO many things we consider good, even righteous. But now these are being flouted every day. For the first time in our lives we’re hungering and thirsting for it, because we’re no longer assured of it. When the President was asked if he was supposed to uphold the Constitution, he said he didn’t know.

That makes me incredibly nervous. I really like the goodness baked into our Constitution.

But I’m seeing righteousness around me in so many other ways. It’s not just about our country. I hunger and thirst to be like the people around me who embody the Sermon on the Mount.

Which leads me to the point about internal righteousness. My guess is we’re to hunger and thirst for righteousness both externally AND internally. To want goodness and right-ness so badly it’s almost like desperation.

I’ve been desperately thirsty before. I was camping with friends in the Canyonlands and we ran out of water on our trek out. We probably weren’t going to die because we were close enough to our cars, but our thirst was nearly unbearable.

Then, along came a Jeep. With ice cold Arizona Ice Teas.

We were filled. Oh man, I’ll never forget that comfort.

So, those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are called blessed. And will be filled. That’s quite a promise.
