The final piece of armor we’re encouraged to take up (in Ephesians 6) is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. But frankly, it seems like the words of another are looming large, even within some churches. I wonder how many of those ministers would be okay with those words being applied to their churches.

First of all, eliminate the missions committee and the support it gives around the world.
Secondly, cut the church budget by one-third for the sake of efficiency.
Third, fire the worship leader and personally take over the music and arts program.
Then, cut half the staff of the Department of Christian Education (coordination of Sunday School teachers, children’s programs, and Christian schools).
Next, set up a perimeter so unsavory people can’t come into the church.
And of course, annex other churches if they are of strategic benefit to their own church.

But fortunately, God didn’t say to do that. He said to take up HIS words. THAT sword.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword; it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.” Hebrews 4:12-14
