I started to pose this question as my blog post today, but I realized if I got a “Pharisee” response I might get mad and I’m just not in the mood. (The Pharisees, in Jesus’ day, kept the letter of the law but missed the point.)
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.” (Matthew 23:23)
And then there’s James 2:13 – “For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.”
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” Matthew 5:7
I guess I’m craving mercy and “heart” in today’s rhetoric.
And for what it’s worth, I think he would show up in a low-caste village in India just to hang out.
